Both are monopolar radiofrequency (RF) devices, but they differ in the frequencies they use. Thermage uses a single 6.78 MHz frequency that primarily targets the dermis, making it effective for skin tightening and reducing fine lines. XERF adds a 2 MHz frequency to 6.78 MHz in a dual-frequency system, delivering energy not only to the dermis but also to deeper tissue layers. This allows for both tightening and a lifting effect on sagging contours. It is also associated with relatively less discomfort than conventional RF procedures.
XERF generally involves relatively less discomfort than conventional RF procedures. However, pain sensitivity varies between individuals, so topical anesthetic cream is applied before treatment when needed.
Temporary redness or a sensation of warmth may occur immediately after treatment, but it usually subsides within a few hours. You can resume daily activities, including washing your face and applying makeup, right away.
You may notice firmer skin immediately after treatment, and collagen remodeling progresses gradually over the following 1–2 months, producing natural-looking results. Although it varies by skin condition, repeat treatment is generally recommended every 6 months to 1 year.
Although RF energy reaches layers deeper than the dermis, its effect in inducing adipocyte death has not been clearly established.
